Adapted Aquatics Specialist
Kennedy Krieger Institute
Baltimore, Maryland – United States
Katie recently earned a Masters in Exercise Science with a specialty in Community Physical Activity. Katie is an Adapted Aquatic Specialist specializing in spinal cord injury rehabilitation at the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury (ICSCI) at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Aquatics is used as a treatment modality throughout the rehabilitation process. The water allows patients to escape the limitations of gravity, helps them to become stronger and provides them with the ability to do more in the pool than they can on land, so they can more quickly achieve their therapeutic goals. As part of ICSCI's continuum of care, she also holds a certificate in adaptive training through Crossfit, specializing in adapted fitness techniques for patients with spinal cord injury. This program offers patients the opportunity to engage in regular physical activity to help build and improve your strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, and cardiovascular health while boosting your overall well-being and confidence in a fun and social environment.
In addition, Katie is also a member of Kennedy Krieger Institute's Baltimore Running Festival Leadership Committee and Team Kennedy Krieger (adapted sports program). The primary purpose of the team, founded in 2011, is to promote community reintegration and physical activity among ICSCI patients. Funds raised go to purchasing adaptive racing equipment, racing scholarships, wellness center scholarships and the development of other adapted sports teams or events. The funds now support the development of a wheelchair lacrosse program in MD, a quad rugby team and additional adaptive sports opportunities, like skiing, surfing and mountain biking.
