Rachel Sayko Adams, PhD, MPH is a Scientist at Brandeis University’s Institute for Behavioral Health at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management. Dr. Adams is a Health Services Researcher at Veterans Health Administration Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) in Aurora, CO. Dr. Adams conducts health services research that focuses on the postdeployment health and behavioral health needs of military service members, Veterans, and their families, with the intention of improving policies and programs to improve the health and wellbeing of military and Veteran communities. Dr. Adams is Co-PI on a NIDILRR study to examine the intersection of opioid misuse, addiction, and disability. She has numerous publications examining the association between combat-acquired traumatic brain injury, posttraumatic stress disorder, and their relative associations with postdeployment unhealthy alcohol use. Dr. Adams was a Co-Investigator and Project Director for the Substance Use and Psychological Injury Combat Study (SUPIC), funded by NIDA, which examined the impact of early treatment for postdeployment substance use and behavioral health problems with long-term outcomes up to three years postdeployment, uniquely merging data between the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Military Health System and the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) for over 643,000 Army soldiers. With funding from NCCIH, Dr. Adams is Co-Investigator and Project Director for continued analyses with the SUPIC cohort to examine the impact of complementary and integrative health treatments as a substitute or complement to opioids when treating Army members with chronic pain.
