Objective : To investigate the correlation between fall incidence and transfer quality, wheelchair skills, and sitting balance among people with multiple sclerosis who are full-time wheelchair and scooter users by using Spearman rank correlation analysis.
Design : cross-sectional study
Setting : University-based and clinical-based research laboratories
Participants (or Animals, Specimens, Cadavers) : 16 people with multiple sclerosis who are full-time wheelchair or scooter users participating in a fall prevention program intervention study: average age 57.9 ±10.2 years (5 male, 12 female), average MS duration19.9 ±8.6 years, average wheelchair use duration 8.2 ±4.9 years.
Interventions : Not applicable
Main Outcome Measure(s) : Key variables included a) number of self-reported falls in the past 6 months; b) transfer quality, assessed via the Transfer Assessment Instrument (TAI); c) sitting balance assessed through the functional sitting test (FIST); d) wheelchair/scooter skills, assessed by the wheelchair skill test (WST).
Results : Fall incidence was significantly correlated with TAI scores (rs=-.514, p=0.042) and FIST scores (rs=-.564, p=0.023). No significant correlation was found between the fall incidence and WST scores (rs=-.264, p=0.323).
Conclusions : Findings support early evidence that building transfer skills and sitting balance may be important components of fall prevention program study for people with multiple sclerosis who are full-time wheelchair and scooter users. More studies to better understand the relationships between falls, and transfers, sitting balance, and wheelchair skills are needed.
