Objective : To present results of intervention related to the use of repetition tasks for Aphasia Treatment.
Design : The single case study included 1 participant with Wernicke Aphasia, secondary to right middle cerebral artery ischemic stroke.
Setting : The study was carried out in an assigned speech room at the university clinic.
Participants (or Animals, Specimens, Cadavers) : SLP Supervisor, SLP Graduate Student Clinician, and 17-year-old Patient.
Interventions : Sentence repetition and writing tasks. Including working memory, auditory and reading comprehension tasks.
Main Outcome Measure(s) : Intensive and continue treatment after stroke may increase positive outcomes. Expected outcomes were to improve language comprehension and auditory feedback. Also, increase expressive utterance complexity from one-word sentence to complete sentences (4 to 5 elements).
Results : Patient produced simple sentences spontaneously with utterances to communicate his needs of 4 to 5 elements. Using the correct syntax and morphology. Follow simple to two-step commands without cues. Comprehends short paragraph, able to answer simple questions (content). Demonstrates functional language comprehension.
Conclusions : Preliminary results suggest that intensive and continued treatment after stroke increased positive outcomes. Results included that patient gradually returned to school and resumed most of his academic workload on a daily basis.
