To identify whether there was a change in body mass index (BMI) and muscle strength of the hip segment in unilateral lower limb amputees who underwent pre prosthesis intervention.
Design : Randomized controlled pilot study
Setting : Hospital with a care center specialized in individuals with amputations, linked to the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology

The sample (N=10) was divided in control (N=5) and intervention (N=5) groups, participants were 18-59 years old, sedentary, with unilateral lower limb amputation , 60% with transfemoral amputation, 40% with transtibial amputation, all subjects during pre prosthesis stage.
Twenty-four sesssions of a hip strengthening protocol were performed. The sessions were twice a week and lasted for 1 hour. Exercises were performed with thera-band® elastic bands, ball and electrical estimulation (KLD Biosystems).
Main Outcome Measure(s) : Between-participants and within-participant comparisons were made. Isometric strength of hip flexion, extension, adduction and abduction was collected with a manual dynamometer (Lafayette Instrument). BMI was obtained with a bone densitometry exam (DEXA). The evaluations were collected before and after the intervention.
There was a significant effect of BMI of the limbs (P 0.001). Regardless of the group and time, the flexion strength (maximum P = 0.003 and submaximal P = 0.003), extension (P = 0.005 and P = 0.010) and for group, time and limb for submaximal extension force (P = 0.034) and group/time (P=0.007) and abduction (submaximal P= 0.040).
In this preliminary study, when compared the groups and limbs, the study showed increased muscle strength in the contralateral limb of the intervention group. A larger sample will be essential to better explain the effect of the intervention.
