This study was conducted to assess traumatic brain injury patient's characteristic, initial GCS, coma duration and complications and their impact on functional outcome and length of stay (LOS) during inpatient rehabilitation at a territory care rehabilitation hospital.
A retrospective study using medical charts (electronic and paper)
Setting : Rehabilitation Hospital, King Fahad Medical City Riyadh Saudi Arabia
Participants (or Animals, Specimens, Cadavers) : 138 patients
Interventions : n/a
Main Outcome Measure(s) : traumatic brain injury patient's characteristic
functional outcome and length of stay (LOS)
We identified 138 patients.Mean age was around 27 years with 92% males. TBI was caused by MVA in 95% of patients. The initial GCS post-trauma was 6 on average while the average duration of coma was 47 days. The time interval between onset of injury to inpatient rehabilitation (IPR) was 263 days while the average LOS was 75 days. Average FIM gain during IPR was 32 with FIM of 54 and 86 at admission and discharge respectively. One-third of patients were full-time employees at the time of injury and around half of all patients were students. Two-thirds of the patients were admitted with tetraplegia. Almost all patients had multiple areas of the brain affected. Two-thirds of patients had fractures of bones other than the skull, and one third were diagnosed with seizure disorder post-TBI. Patients with higher age have less FIM at discharge (P
Serious measures for prevention of MVA need to be ascertained in the country as it remains the major cause of TBI. This renders the need for optimizing earlier rehabilitation intervention in acute care, increasing the awareness among healthcare professionals and empowering the resources for comprehensive rehabilitation in trauma centers.
