Category: Neurodegenerative Disease (e.g. MS, Parkinson's disease); Cross-Cutting; Measurement
Objective : To examine current applications and future avenues of artificial neural networks (ANN) in neurorehabilitation research
Data Sources: PubMed and Web of Science
Study Selection: Studies were included if they utilized ANN in neurological conditions.
Data Extraction: A total of 1,109 articles were identified in the initial database search. After removing duplicates, 1,011 articles were screened and 52 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility by two blinded reviewers.
Setting : N/A
Participants (or Animals, Specimens, Cadavers) : N/A
Interventions : N/A
Main Outcome Measure(s) : N/A
Results : Data Synthesis: A total of 18 articles were included in this review. ANN were used for prediction of functional outcomes and mortality in 10 studies and classification of motor and cognitive status in eight studies across different neurological conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, and Parkinson’s disease.
Few studies in neurorehabilitation have included ANN as a statistical method of analyzing data, primarily in clinical outcome prediction and classification studies. Overall, ANN outperform traditional regression analyses in accuracy of prediction and classification. With the advent of new technology, such as mobile health applications, activity trackers, and wearable devices, ANN may become an efficient tool to support clinician’s decision-making process and provide new insights from real-world datasets. This review highlights the potential of ANN as a powerful tool to analyze highly complicated datasets and suggests that future studies in neurorehabilitation should consider ANN for data analysis.
