Objective: To identify the kinematic profiles of upper extremity, head and spoon during self-feeding.
Design: Experimental study.
Setting: Home environment experimental session.
Participants (or Animals, Specimens, Cadavers) :
Participants: 65 typically developing (TD) and 6 children with spastic CP children, aged 2.11 to 9.2 years.
Intervention: Each participant was seated according to ergonomic criteria and ate yoghurt during two trials. Kinematic data were analyzed offline via a Matlab routine, following manual identification of eating cycle phases, kinematic variables associated with spatial and temporal movement parameters were calculated. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board.

Conclusion Kinematic data documenting self-feeding was demonstrated age-related changes in some key variables, supporting the use of this approach for novel assessment and interventions such as designing and fabricating instrumented eating utensils. Identifying the underlying kinematic profiles of self-feeding in relation to age and performance, of TD children and children with CP promotes the understanding and therefore the ability to reach novel assessment and intervention approaches in the practice of daily life activities.
