Objective : To investigate how the changes of electroencephalogram (EEG) power band with aging would alter bimanual motor control strategy.
Design : Two groups, cross-sectional study. During the experiment session, pre-maximum voluntary force (MVF) was measured first. Then, under EEG recording, each subject performed 13 trials of sine curve force matching tasks use both hands. After the tasks, post-MVF was measured and the difficulty that the subject felt during the experiment was measured with a visual analogue scale (VAS). Nineteen sensors are present in the international 10-20 system: Fp1, Fp2, Fz, F3, F4, F7, F8, Cz, C3, C4, T3, T4, T5, T6, P3, P4, O1, and O2. The ground electrode was located at Fpz.
Setting : The laboratory environments at research center of university.
Participants (or Animals, Specimens, Cadavers) :
Twenty-nine right-handed healthy volunteers were included in the study and divided into a young group (N = 17, age = 24.9 ± 2.5 years) and elderly group (N = 12, 72.9 ± 3.8 years).
Interventions : Not applicable.
Main Outcome Measure(s) :
Spectral analysis of EEG with four frequency bands (alpha1:8–10 Hz, alpha2: 10–12 Hz, beta1: 12–25 Hz, beta2: 25–40 Hz) and bimanual motor synergy.
Results : The paired t-test was used to detect differences. For the EEG result, decreased spectral power among channels 3–6, 8–10, and 12–17 in beta1 and among channels 4–5, 8–9, 10, and 12–17 in beta2 was shown. For the motor synergy result, elderly showed decrease Vindex and increased VUCM and VORT. The VAS result showed no differences.
Conclusions : The decreased spectral power of beta1 and beta2 among elderly indicated lower activity compared with young subjects. This is related with deficits in the recruitment of cortical neurons during motor control. The deteriorated bimanual motor synergy among elderly people would be related with aging induced EEG dynamic changes.
