The goal of this proposed symposium is to detail the emerging evidence regarding the feasibility and efficacy of locomotor training of skilled walking tasks at higher cardiovascular intensities as compared to traditional rehabilitation. We will emphasize the dichotomy between this strategy and traditional rehabilitation strategies, and relative efficacy of high intensity walking exercise, and provide evidence to mitigate concerns related to safety and clinically applicability of experimental training.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, attendees will be expected to accurately define measures of intensity that could readily be applied to neurological populations
Understand the barriers of determining actual "intensity" to be utilized during training paradigms
Delineate the evidence of facilitating high intensity training in various patient populations
Comprehend the complexity of determining what the actual intensity of training should be given neuromuscular vs cardiopulmonary limitations.
Understand various strategies for application to the clinical setting.
