Higher levels of patient engagement are associated with increased functional recovery and shorter lengths of stay in medical rehabilitation. However, achieving strong patient engagement depends on a high level of targeted interaction between therapists and patients. To warrant quality patient-clinician interaction, our multidisciplinary team developed Enhanced Medical Rehabilitation (EMR) to teach physical and occupational therapists a set of behavioral skills to engage patients and involve them in high-intensity therapy to improve rehabilitation outcomes. This presentation will provide the background and current evidence of EMR, and introduce the application of EMR adapted in different rehabilitation settings via the implementation science approach.
