Innovation comes in many forms, but a gap persists between the clinicians who see a need for it and engineers who can assist in creating it. This course will discuss how to implement an interdisciplinary approach in the design and development of novel rehabilitation devices. We will discuss conceptualization, market assessment, product design and development, proof of concept, and outlining of clinical trials needed to evaluate devices. This process will be explored through our team's own experiences developing two versions of a therapeutic, video game based, rehabilitation ankle robot for children with functional deficits, evaluated in the lab and the home environment, respectively.
