Gunshot wound (GSW) injuries have been increasing over the past 5 years and cause 13% of all spinal cord injuries (SCI). This symposium reviews the known epidemiology of firearm related injuries and long-term social, economic, and quality of life outcomes after GSW SCI sustained in childhood and young adulthood. Focused research endeavors such as Firearm Safety Among Children and Teens and social programs targeting primary and secondary prevention of firearm injuries will be described. Prevention and advocacy remain important tools to improve morbidity and mortality associated with firearm injuries.
