In the United States and globally, caregivers help to support individuals with serious illness and/or catastrophic injury and provide invaluable support to a growing number of people living with disability. Large demographic shifts and advances in medical technology and resuscitation ensure that many more people will rely on caregivers and long-term care services in coming years. This presentation will review key population characteristics of caregivers in the United States, effective policy strategies to support caregivers for specific rehabilitation populations across the care continuum, and the role of partnering with patients and caregivers to design meaningful and evidence-based care pathways.
