ABI has a significant impact on public health, often causing deficits in emotional regulation that can lead to loss of employment, increased risk of suicide and diminished social participation.  We urgently need ways to rehabilitate these individuals and support their reentry into society. This symposium will examine the variety of treatment options for individuals with ABI, and discuss the importance of objective and subjective measurement approaches to the field of clinical and research rehabilitation. The presentation will provide evidence about services and means of support to improve social participation and emotional regulation.

Learning Objectives:

• Review the neurophysiology of self-regulation and mechanism of emotional dysregulation in individuals with acquired brain injury.
• Define and briefly explore evidence based practices in increasing social participation, by improving emotional regulation and problem solving efficiency
• Examine the application of a psychosocial model ("Transitions") to improve emotional regulation and goal setting (e.g., vocational pursuits, social relations, & intimacy) for individuals with ABI,to increase social participation
• Discuss the theoretical components of the psychophysiological approach, and how it addresses self-regulation
• Describe how heart rate variability biofeedback modulates ANS activity and can be a viable strategy for improving the ability of individuals with ABI to self-regulate their emotional responses and behavior
