Ischaemic heart disease remains the most common reason for sudden death in adults and senior athletes. In this presentation, participants will hear how emotional stress and lifestyle changes associated with the demands of managing a multimillion dollar sports industry can be both challenging and devastating to health. This presentation will highlight the research along with case studies that focus on the cardiovascular issues experienced by former professional soccer players who have transitioned to managing the world’s top level soccer teams based in the United Kingdom. It will examine the often “excessive” demands of the job on personal health and wellbeing. Research findings will be also shared about the cardiovascular health of former National Football League players. Topics covered will include detraining post athletic excellence, substance abuse, lifestyle changes that contribute towards premature ill health, stress and leadership in sport, alterations in haemodynamic and haematological profiles that can be detrimental to cardiovascular health in these high profile leaders in sport and retired athletes. Key messages will be shared that we can pass onto the public at large, including the corporate world, to promote the prevention of premature cardiac disease.
