Ambulation (both walking and in some cases running) is an important determinant of functional independence and quality of life following lower extremity limb loss. However, impairments in gait can be associated with chronic pain, reduced function, and increased risk of injury. This session will first review the tenants of normal walking and running gait. Using interactive, clinical examples, the session will highlight up to date rehabilitative and prosthetic strategies to promote optimal mobility following amputation, with an emphasis on preservation of function and injury prevention.
