Vice President, Research and Technology

Mike is vice president for research and technology at Shepherd Center, and founding director of the Center’s Virginia C. Crawford Research Institute. He also oversees Shepherd’s Assistive Technology Center and Noble Learning Resource Center. Since joining Shepherd in 1996, Mike has served in various management roles, including ex-officio member of the Board of Directors and chief information officer from 2000-2016. Mike is also co-principal investigator of the NIDILRR-funded Livewell Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Access, a partnership between Shepherd, Duke University and Northeastern University, and principal investigator on two additional federally funded projects.
Mike has over 30 years of leadership experience, having served as principal or co-principal investigator on 18 federally-funded grants, including four national research centers. Mike’s research interests address the design and management of programs and services that promote full inclusion of people with disabilities. His work includes applications of universal design, ICT, and behavior management strategies to promote health, wellness, and community participation. His research contributions include over 100 peer-reviewed publications. He has been a surveyor for CARF International since 1996. Mike is also a Fellow of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM), serving on the ACRM Governing Board since 2011.
Mike received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Jacksonville State University, and his master’s and doctorate in applied behavior analysis from the University of Kansas, where he also served as associate director of the Research and Training Center on Independent Living from 1983-1988. From 1988-1992, Mike served as program director and regional vice president for Learning Services Corporation, a provider of post-acute rehabilitation services for individuals with traumatic brain injuries. Prior to joining Shepherd in 1996, Mike was director of the Center for Universal Design and research associate professor at NC State University.
