Thirty-one states and the District of Columbia currently have laws legalizing marijuana in some form. Other states will soon legalize medical marijuana after recently passing measures permitting use of medical marijuana or recreational marijuana. Many nursing centers and assisted living communities aren’t sure how to handle the increasing number of residents, and even staff, who are taking medical marijuana. Although the path has been tricky to navigate, the benefits for residents are real. As this green industry grows, it is important to understand the legal landscape of medical marijuana, the risks involved, and the effects on health care providers, staff, and residents.
