Patients who use illicit intravenous drugs often require central venous catheters to treat the medical consequences of their drug use. These patients present complex medical, social, and economic management problems. A comprehensive approach to the treatment of these patients can ensure safe and effective medical care in a cost-effective and humane context. Screening tools identify patients who are at risk for central line tampering. Infectious disease consultation often decreases treatment duration and suggests effective alternative treatment strategies that decrease the required duration of CVC time. Medical addiction management with structured programs and medication ensure compliance, treat addiction, and decrease social stresses. Treatment contracts set the standards for treatment and ensure patients understand what is required of them. Tamper-evident Technology can decrease tampering with central lines or alert health care providers to that tampering. This presentation will address all of these approaches and ensure that providers can offer their patients the most cost and medically effective approach to the management of these patients.
