A Problem With Midlines: Can I Get A Dual Lumen? After placing hundreds of lines, it became clear that bedside staff at our facility did not understand the true purpose of a dual lumen midline, the anatomic placement, or infusion mechanics. Continuous line surveillance by our vascular access team from insertion to removal clearly showed that non-compatible medications were being infused through these dual lumen midlines and contributing to complications of DVT, phlebitis, and extravasation. We are prepared to discuss our systematic approach to identifying the problem, how we performed facility wide education, and also present the results that alternative catheter types proved more beneficial to the patient outcome and experience.
