Nothing to Disclose
Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVs) are an essential medical device with over 2 billion purchased worldwide annually. While patient need for PIVs is high, up to 69% fail due to complications such as occlusion or phlebitis. PIV replacements increase healthcare budgets and some patients require higher risk central venous devices, because they have run out of PIV insertion sites. Midline catheters (MCs) are offered as an alternative to meet the ever-growing needs of these patients. Until now, no randomised controlled trials have compared these devices with PIVs.
This session will provide an overview of PIV research and share findings of a pilot randomised controlled trial comparing PIVs with MCs.
