(D5) Best Practices for Line Care by Bedside Nurses: What Would Florence Do to Prevent Clabsis?

At large academic institutions with high central venous catheter (CVC) usage it is not always possible to have trained vascular access nurses manage all CVC care and maintenance; bedside nurses can be trained to complete CVC care effectively and ultimately reduce central line bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). Best practice tools to assist the bedside nurse include:

1) Provide dedicated hands-on education and annual competency on line care practices.

2) Cluster care together with weekly dressing changes, needless connector changes, and tubing changes.

3) Use of accountability partner to ensure sterile technique is maintained during dressing changes.

4) Customized dressing kit that includes all supplies needed to complete dressing change with instructions to provide important reminders ensuring that uniform practice occurs.

Eighteen months after implementing this CVC Bundle with bedside nurses owning CVC care at 2 large acute care hospitals, a 50% reduction of CLABSIs occurred.
