According to the CDC, one in six CLABSIs are caused by serious antibiotic resistant threats. The WHO reports by 2050, 10 million people will die of infections due to antimicrobial resistance. This is a serious global threat. Antibiotics are relatively so effective, non-toxic and inexpensive, so easy to use, that they are prone to abuse. Antibiotics are the only drugs with a significant impact on public health. The implementation of a multidisciplinary Antimicrobial Stewardship program ensures judicious use of antibiotics, antimicrobial resistance surveillance, and the use of alternatives. Multidisciplinary strategies help address and consequently decrease antibiotic resistance in hospitals and in the community.
This presentation will expose the multiple facets of antibiotic misuse, outline core principles of AMS, bust antimicrobial resistance myths through examples and evidence-based facts. It will provide clear insight into everyone’s responsibility to promote and adhere to AMS at work and at home in order to help mitigate the imminent risk of a post-antibiotic era where getting a simple infection will be a life-threatening event.
Oh dear! How bad can it be? I wash my hands…
