Many patients with advanced vascular access needs also suffer from extensive comorbidities. These common comorbidities can also cause these patients to be at high risk for associated skin breakdown. While a transparent semi-permeable membrane is the preferred and recommended dressing for all central lines, it's not always the best for an individual patient's need. Alternative dressing applications integrating gauze and various types of soft silicone foam dressings can help heal surrounding skin damage and preserve the line for the duration of the patient's therapy while still maintaining an occlusive insertion site. This presentation will investigate the commons types of skin breakdown associated with PICC insertion sites and how alternative dressing approaches can best be utilized to repair the damage and maintain the line.
