Many hospitals are implementing PIV insertion and maintenance bundles in an attempt to reduce PIV-related complications and infection. We systematically reviewed the literature and identified 13 PIV insertion and/or maintenance bundles. We examined the core components of each bundle and the evidence for their effectiveness. Insertion bundles comprised 21 different components, and maintenance bundles comprised 22 different components. Each individual bundle comprised between two to seven items. Implementation strategies included education, audits, and feedback. Outcomes reported include reductions in bloodstream infection, phlebitis and mortality. However, wide variation currently exists among PIV bundles and further studies on standardizing bundle components are needed.
