Resources are often deployed to implement interventions to improve the quality of care; however, once the implementation is complete and transitions to operations the risk for drift greatly increases. Identifying Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and a performance monitoring strategy supports the adoption and sustainment of these interventions. In many cases, project KPIs are monitoring for a brief span post-implementation (i.e. 30 day or 60 day audits), but this is often short-lived. Embedding performance monitoring into the daily operations is crucial for sustaining gains. Performance monitoring is not a standalone solution. In order to create the greatest impact, communicating learning's system-wide and addressing breakdowns in the system is necessary to prevent drift. By establishing a system that addresses these key points to monitor central line care and maintenance performance, organizations can maximize the impact of preventable harm interventions and sustain top performance.
