250-440,000 preventable deaths occur in health care, in the United States, every year. This number has drastically climbed since the seminal report, To Err is Human, because now included are Hospital Acquired Infections and Hospital Acquired Conditions. It is easy to recognize the patient as the "victim" in these preventable events, but recent literature is also challenging health care to observe the "second victim". What is happening to the health care providers responsible for having caused patient harm? Research has observed oftentimes health care providers responsible for having caused harm suffer from depression, insomnia, a lack of confidence in their workspace, or even drop out of the profession. This presentation will review basic human psychology and ways in which team members can better support peers when safety events occur, and challenge the audience to identify system causes (as opposed to individual failures) following safety events.
