In response to both cost pressures and a need to improve flow and standards in the Emergency Department (ED), a dedicated ED IV access team was introduced at a NHS University Hospital. The team is comprised of non-professional support staff who have been trained to become experts in performing ultrasound guided peripheral IV procedures.
The IV team work closely with all the clinical teams based in ED and aim to:
Significantly improve patient experience by ensuring timely, correctly placed, first time PIVC insertion as per Vessel Health Preservation (VHP) recommendations; Reduce the cost associated with unnecessary PIVC insertion by rationalising all IV procedures; Ensure blood samples are obtained, processed and results presented to the decision maker as quickly as possible; Ensure all blood cultures are taken to the appropriate standard, minimising the possibility of contamination.
The rationale for the team and data supporting the strengths and limitations of the project will be presented and discussed. This will include the experience of training non-qualified staff to be able to perform ultrasound guided PIVC insertion.
