Nursing programs face challenges in their curricular efforts to produce a nurse generalist that will have the requisite skills and knowledge upon graduation to successfully navigate the fast-paced world of patient care. Students in healthcare disciplines begin their academic journey with an incomplete understanding of the rigors of the educational training and the time required for skill acquisition. Nursing schools have varied curriculum for PIV skill acquisition and utilize varied content and texts which support the training. Although content is supported by EBP and relevant standards, the training modules infrequently address the necessary depth of knowledge required to perform at a high level of skill acquisition and established competence.The presentation will discuss the second part of the survey results obtained from an AVA Task Force investigation of how U.S. and Canadian colleges/schools of nursing educate and assess PIV competence of student nurses. The presenters will discuss the survey results, conclusions, and offer a process supported challenge to a VAS aimed at grass-roots engagement as content experts at the higher education level.
