This session will explore the current understanding of skill acquisition of various ultrasound-guided vascular access procedures. How is success defined? What factors influence skill acquisition? How many attempts does a clinician need to become “proficient” in performing ultrasound PIV placement? We will discuss various assessment tools that can be utilized to evaluate a learner as procedural skills are acquired. We will share our institutional experience with using cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis as a methodology for tracking learner performance of various ultrasound-guided vascular access procedures. We will discuss how regular assessment of performance can influence training and improve skill acquisition. Key learnings of this session will also include a conversation about the concept of a “learning curve” and how it applies to ultrasound-guided PIV in pediatric patients.
