In the hospital and clinic setting, there is more control over how central lines are cared for. Consistent, standardized and repeatable processes have been able to reduce the risk of complications associated with implanted vascular access lines in those settings. At home, when care is passed on to the patient or family, risk increases, and complication rates have not changed significantly in recent years. If the same standardized, repeatable processes that are used in the hospital care setting can be taught to patients and families and brought into the home setting, reducing complications can be an achievable goal. Hear from Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist, Claudia Hoyen, MD, and cancer patient, cancer mom and innovator, Kezia Fitzgerald, as they share their unique perspectives on how care processes in the hospital can be transferred to home, and how clinicians and patients can advocate for process improvements in both settings.
