Historically, our Rapid Response Team was known as the "difficult IV team". Over time, the stress of not being able to provide a patient with the best line, at the appropriate time, prompted the initiation of our dual role Rapid Response/Vascular Access Team. This dual functioning role allows for improved vascular access due to the skill set and knowledge base of the Rapid Response RN in areas including triage, anatomy, acute disease processes, managing critical care patients, and understanding of what is the most appropriate line, every time. An identified gap in practice led us to become a center of excellence for central line insertion. This presentation is to demonstrate the diversity and progress of the Vascular Access Specialty with the intent to inspire other teams to examine their teams, patient care processes and improve outcomes by providing comprehensive vascular access support.
