Peripheral intravenous (IV) therapy is one of the most common invasive procedures performed. The literature concludes that in the hospital setting nearly half of these lines placed will fail before therapy is complete, with the leading complication being infiltration at 20-23% of those failures. Infiltrations have caused severe injuries, threatened institution reputations and increased health care expenses. Though the ultimate impact is on the patient, who is faced with the aftermath upon being discharged.

During this symposium, we will push past the statistics, and provide a forum for patients and caregivers to tell their stories beyond what’s in their medical records. The audience will hear several unique perspectives about the impact infiltrations have had on their care, as well as on their lives outside of the hospital walls. Panelists include parents of children born in critical condition, a chronic pain patient, and a clinician who is involved in the care of a family member. The moderator will discuss their experiences, issues they advocate for, and lastly, how vascular access professionals can play a critical role in optimizing the power of the story in the patient's journey and join the movement toward a new standard of IV therapy care.
