The ideal is that each patient receives the vascular access that they need for their treatment in a timely and efficient manner. Often this does not happen because the difficulties of a particular patient are under recognized. Even when patient difficulties are known, there is not an effective plan to address the issues. Work has begun to develop tools and rules to address these problems. This presentation will survey the available PIV assessment tools and chart their development. We will also discuss the definition of DIVA (Difficult IV Access). Finally, we will discuss the validation of these tools and the implications for practice.
