Catheter-related deep vein thrombosis (CRDVT) is a recognised adverse event when a vascular access device is inserted into venous anatomy. In this session, you will understand how and why it requires additional clinical management which is associated with an economic cost to the healthcare service provider and associated with patient discomfort. This cost and discomfort can be avoided. This session will illuminate the various interventions which may reduce the risk of CRDVT. This could assist clinicians to make better clinical decisions. However, it is important to acknowledge the evidence base for these decisions. Therefore, this session will identify and critique the quality and strength of a clinical guideline for CRDVT.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the epidemiology of catheter related thrombosis and how this should influence vascular access device selection.
• Define the etiology/aetiology and the pathogenesis of thrombosis and how this can influence vascular access decision making.
• Appraise the strength of evidence for catheter related thrombosis management.
• Promote the importance of a core outcome set of variables for clinical research related to catheter related thrombosis.
