In my digital humanities project, I aim to solve the problem of how to define a classical Daoist text by using statistical methods, such as examining relative word frequencies and the standard deviations of those frequencies, to analyze large amounts of texts. I first look at what some leading scholars in China, Hong Kong, the United States, and Europe say constitutes a classical Daoist text. I look for high-frequency words in these classical Daoist texts and then check the entire canon of the late Warring States/Early Han dynasty to see which texts are most similar to the Daoist texts (by relative word frequency). In this way, I hope that we can find a pattern among Daoist texts, and see if other texts in the canon are similar. If we can find texts that contain Daoist language, then this is a strong indicator that the texts are indeed classical Daoist.
