This presentation offers an introduction and demonstration of DIRECT, a new digital tool designed to simplify phonological queries of early Chinese texts. DIRECT enables users to quickly and easily search for parallel passages in texts on the basis of their phonological features (as opposed to the standard grapheme-based search found in most databases). This allows users to identify homophonous and near-homophonous passages that may be obscured by graphic variation in other automatic search tools. DIRECT can be used either online through a web browser or offline via the command line interface. Attendants will see demonstrations of both the offline and online capabilities of DIRECT’s current version, as the three presenters are further refining its functionality and precision.
