Recent work has described the steady decline of graduate student mental health as a crisis. This sensitive population is 3-6 times more likely than the general public to experience mental health disorders, including anxiety and depression (Evans et al. 2018). Approximately 10% of graduate students encounter suicidal thoughts (Moffitt et al. 2018; Garcia-Williams et al. 2014). Although there has been an increase in mental health service availability,
The rate of hospitalizations and suicide attempts among graduate students continues to rise (Drum et al. 2009). The much antiquated mentality that it is a necessity for graduate students to pay their dues is finally being replaced by new undertakings that aim to promote emotional wellbeing by expanding visibility and dampening stigma. The goal of this session is to address the early career trainee mental health crisis and equip trainees with concrete tools to promote mental health. The session will include talks from four topic experts, an opportunity for Q&A with the panel of speakers, and small group discussions.
