Dr. Sana Syed is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist and Physician-Scientist at the University of Virginia (UVA) with an adjunct faculty appointment at the Aga Khan University (AKU), Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. The overarching goal of her research program is to study gut structure and function in children. She obtained her medical degree in 2007 from AKU, following graduation she served as a research assistant for the 2010 Global Burden of Disease Study (WHO/Gates Foundation initiative) at AKU. Dr. Syed completed her Pediatrics residency at Duke University with fellowships in Pediatric Gastroenterology (Emory University) and Nutrition (Harvard Medical School/ Boston Children’s). Her graduate education includes a Masters’ of Science in Clinical Research and Masters’ of Science in Data Science. Dr. Syed has had successful grant support from the National Institutes of Health (NIDDK– K23 Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award) Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation (Litwin IBD Pioneers Program), and Engineering-in-Medicine seed funding. She is also a UVA Co-I and nutrition consultant for a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded project entitled, ‘Study of Environmental Enteropathy and Malnutrition (SEEM) in Pakistan’ (co-PIs: Ali/Moore). She also leads a multi-disciplinary Data Science in Gastroenterology Lab at UVA.
