Program Director- Nutrition

Educated in history and political science (BA) and animal science/agriculture (BS/MS), Dr. Raiten received his doctorate in Human Nutrition from Penn State University and followed that with a postdoctoral fellowship at the Child Study Center of Yale University Medical School.
Upon joining NICHD in 1999, Dr. Raiten has been involved in a range of activities focused on global health from serving as the US Secretariat for two bilateral programs with the Government of India (GOI) to service as a consultant to the WHO on issues ranging from development of guidelines for nutritional care of people living with HIV to recent activities regarding the impact of COVID-19 in infant feeding practices, maternal, child health and nutrition.
Since 2009, Dr. Raiten has served as the Program Director for nutrition/NICHD/NIH. In addition to his role as a program officer he served as the project leader for two projects funded jointly by NICHD, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and members of the global food and nutrition community: 1) iron and malaria project: to address factors affecting the safety and effectiveness of interventions to prevent and treat iron deficiency; 2) Biomarkers of Nutrition for Development (BOND); designed to support discovery, development and implementation of nutrient specific biomarkers across the range of uses represented by the global food and nutrition enterprise.
Dr/ Raiten currently serves as the Chair of the USAID Advancing Nutrition Anemia Task Force, and co-chairs several sub-groups of the USG Global Nutrition Coordination Plan (GNCP). He serves as a member of the Scientific Steering Committee for the Micronutrient Forum (MNF). Recent activities include serving as founder and co-chair of the Climate/environmental change, health, agriculture and improving nutrition (CHAIN) Research Interest Section (RIS) of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN).
Dr. Raiten was recently elected as an ASN Fellow.
