Dr. Md. Khairul Bashar has been working as Country Manager for HarvestPlus Bangladesh since 2013. Before joining HarvestPlus, he was engaged with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) as consultant for the ‘Sustainable Rice Seed Production and Dissemination Systems for Bangladesh’- a USAID funded project. Prior to that he served Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) for 33 years in different capacities as an experienced rice breeder and a seed system specialist, retired as Director for Research from the same Institute. During his long-time research activities, he participated and contributed to the development of modern rice varieties as a member of varietal development program, and 50 rice varieties have been developed during his job tenure. He directly involved with the development of the popular variety BRRI dhan34. He also directly participated for the release of first biofortified zinc rice variety, BRRI dhan62 in Bangladesh. He has developed a Rice Seed Network for efficient and quick delivery of quality seed to end users, involving of about 1000 Govt., Non-Govt. and Private seed entrepreneurs including small and medium seed producing associations.
Dr. Bashar obtained his second master’s degree from the University of the Philippines LosBaños (UPLB) and PhD from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Bangladesh. Dr. Bashar acted as the adjunct faculty member at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University and at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Also, an active member of Research Supervisor/Committee for the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding in the above-mentioned universities since 2003.
He has more than 150 publications in the national and international Journals, Chapters of Book, Proceedings and Articles.
Dr. Bashar becomes the fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Agriculture (BAAG), he is the member of Bangladesh Safe Food (BSAFE) Foundation, life member of Bangladesh Agriculturist Society (KBI) and Plant Breeding and Genetic Society of Bangladesh (PBGSB).
